How to Write a Welcome Email Sequence
The first few emails after someone signs up matter more than any email you'll send later. Here's how to structure them so you build trust instead of losing the subscriber.

Someone's interest in you is at its peak the moment they sign up, and it fades fast if nothing happens next. A welcome sequence is a short, automated series of emails that uses that window well, instead of wasting it.
Step 1: Understand the sequence's real job
This isn't about selling immediately. It's about turning a stranger who liked one thing you offered into someone who trusts you enough to eventually buy from you. Rushing that order backfires.
Step 2: Email 1 — deliver immediately
Send this the moment someone signs up. Deliver exactly what you promised (the lead magnet from the list-building lesson), and briefly set expectations for what they'll hear from you next.
Step 3: Email 2 — your story
Sent a day or two later. Share a short, honest version of why you do what you do. This is where a subscriber starts seeing you as a real person, not just a source of information.
Step 4: Email 3 — pure value, no selling
A few days after that. Give one genuinely useful tip or insight with nothing attached to it. No offer, no pitch. This is what proves you're worth staying subscribed to.
Step 5: Email 4 — a soft introduction to what you offer
Now introduce what you actually sell or offer, framed around a real problem it solves rather than a hard sell. This is the first email in the sequence with a genuine call-to-action.
Step 6: Set it up as automation
Inside your email tool, look for Automations or Journeys. Set each email to trigger a set number of days after signup, rather than relying on yourself to remember to send them manually.
Common mistakes
- Selling in the very first email, before any trust has been built
- Sending one welcome email and then going silent
- Doing this manually instead of setting up automation, so it depends on remembering
- Turning every email in the sequence into a pitch instead of earning trust first
Your first step
- Write your Email 1 that delivers the promised offer immediately
- Write your Email 2 sharing your real story
- Write your Email 3 with one genuinely useful tip and zero selling
- Write your Email 4 with a soft, problem-framed introduction to your offer
- Set all four up as an automated sequence inside your email tool
