How to Retarget People Who Didn't Buy

Someone who visited your site and left didn't say no: they got interrupted, weren't ready yet, or had one unanswered question. Retargeting reaches exactly that person, and it consistently converts better than cold ads because they already know who you are.

Step 1: Confirm your tracking is capturing the right actions

Your Meta Pixel (set up in the first lesson of this pillar) needs to be firing on the right pages: product pages, cart pages, checkout for retargeting audiences to have anything to draw from. Check Events Manager to confirm those events are actually recording.

Step 2: Build a specific Custom Audience

In Audiences > Create Audience > Custom Audience, build one from a specific action rather than "everyone who visited the site" for example, people who viewed a product page or added to cart but didn't complete a purchase within a set number of days.

Step 3: Write different messaging than your cold ad

This is the step people skip, and it's the one that actually matters. Don't just show the same cold-traffic ad again. Address the hesitation directly: answer a common objection, show social proof or a testimonial, or highlight something they may not have noticed the first time. A retargeting ad's job is different from a cold ad's job, and the message should reflect that.

Step 4: Set a frequency cap

Under your ad set, limit how many times the same person sees the retargeting ad in a given period. Without a cap, retargeting ads can quickly go from "helpful reminder" to "the reason someone blocks your Page."

Step 5: Exclude anyone who already converted

Add a second exclusion audience for anyone who already purchased, so you're not spending budget re-selling to someone who already bought.

Step 6: Test your retargeting window

Try a shorter window (7 days) and a longer one (30 days) as separate audiences and compare performance. Some products get bought on impulse within days, others need a longer window to come back to.

Common mistakes

  • Showing the identical cold-traffic ad to a warm retargeting audience instead of addressing their specific hesitation.
  • No frequency cap, leading to the same person seeing the ad dozens of times and getting annoyed.
  • Forgetting to exclude people who already purchased.
  • Using only one retargeting window instead of testing a shorter and longer option.
  • Retargeting immediately with a discount instead of first addressing the actual objection.

Your first step

  • Confirm your Pixel is tracking product views and cart actions correctly.
  • Build one Custom Audience from a specific unconverted action.
  • Write a retargeting ad that addresses a real objection, not a repeat of your cold ad.
  • Set a frequency cap on the retargeting ad set.
  • Exclude anyone who has already purchased.
