How to Run Your First Facebook/Instagram Ad
A real walkthrough of launching your first Meta ad: campaign setup, the one tracking step almost everyone skips, and what to check before you hit publish.

A first ad usually fails for one of two boring reasons: no tracking was set up before launch, so there's no real data to learn from, or the budget got spread across too many decisions at once. Fix those two things and you're already ahead of most beginners.
Step 1: Decide your one goal first
Before opening anything, decide exactly what this ad needs to do: get website traffic, collect leads, or drive direct sales. One clear goal. Trying to get all three from one ad usually gets none of them well.
Step 2: Set up Meta Ads Manager
- Go to business.facebook.com and set up a Business Manager account if you don't have one, connecting your Facebook Page and Instagram account.
- Inside Business Manager, open Ads Manager.
- Click Create to start a new campaign.
Step 3: Choose your campaign objective
Meta will ask for an objective that matches your Step 1 goal: Traffic, Leads, or Sales are the common starting points. Pick the one that matches exactly, since it changes how the algorithm optimizes delivery.
Step 4: Build the ad set
- Set your budget and schedule — a modest daily budget to start is fine; you're not committing to it forever.
- For Placements, choose Advantage+ Placements (automatic) rather than manually picking platforms — Meta's system generally uses a small budget more efficiently than manual selection does.
- Set basic audience details — the full targeting approach gets its own lesson next; for now, keep it reasonably broad rather than narrow.
Step 5: Build the ad creative
- Upload a clear image or short video — real, specific visuals consistently outperform generic stock photography.
- Write your Primary Text (the main caption) and a short, clear Headline.
- Choose a Call-to-Action button that matches your goal exactly (Learn More, Shop Now, Sign Up).
Step 6: Install tracking before you launch
This is the step that gets skipped constantly. In Business Manager, go to Events Manager and set up the Meta Pixel on your website (most website builders have a simple paste-this-code or plugin option for this). Without it, you'll have no real data on what happened after someone clicked. You'll be flying blind on whether the ad actually worked.
Step 7: Review and publish
Double check your goal, audience, budget, and creative one more time, then click Publish. Ads typically go through a review process that can take a few hours. Check back rather than assuming something's broken if it's not live instantly.
Common mistakes
- Launching without the Pixel installed, leaving no real data to judge performance by.
- Manually restricting placements or targeting too tightly on a small budget.
- Using generic stock imagery instead of something specific to the actual offer.
- Picking a vague or mismatched call-to-action button.
- Judging the ad's performance within the first few hours instead of giving it real time to run.

- Set up Business Manager and connect your Page.
